POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE POLITENESS IN THE UTTERANCES FOUND IN “THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN” (2022) MOVIE SCRIPT
This study aims to analyze utterances in “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022) movie script by Martin McDonagh using Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory. The theories in pragmatics used to analyze the utterances are positive and negative politeness strategies. This research employed a qualitative research and was conducted using the descriptive qualitative method to answer the questions concerning the specific occurrences of politeness strategies. The result of this study show that positive politeness strategy is the most frequently used, with 62 instances encompassing all strategies identified in the framework, reflecting the characters’ attempts to maintain solidarity and strengthen social bonds in the tight-knit community. Meanwhile, 49 instances of negative politeness strategy is noted, involving eight strategies that underscore the characters’ efforts to respect autonomy and manage conflicts with deference and indirectness. These findings highlight the interplay between fostering connection and addressing individual needs in the rural Irish setting of the movie.
