GOTTLIEB’S SUBTITLING STRATEGIES FOUND IN THE SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE (2023) MOVIE SCRIPT
This study aims to analyze the subtitle strategies found in a movie script using several theories in subtitling. The subtitling strategies theories by Gottlieb (1992) is used to identify the subtitling strategies in the movie and further determine the most frequent strategies that are identified. This research use a qualitative approach. It is conducted by using a descriptive qualitative research method to present the data analysis and the data were collected by an observation technique. The result of this research is the types of subtitling strategies found in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (2023) movie script. The strategies applied are paraphrase, transfer, imitation, condensation, and deletion. The highest frequency of strategy used by the translator is paraphrase at 41 frequencies. The reason that paraphrase strategy is the most dominant strategy out of the 5 strategies that is found in this research is because the translator can easily alter the structure of the subtitles from the English language into the Indonesian language to help the audience have a better grasp of the context of the dialogue and scenes. While the lowest frequency of strategy used by the translator is condensation at 5 frequencies. The reason is because the translator needed to change the sentences into shorter utterances and condensed the text from the English language into the Indonesian language but still did not lose the message through great difficulty. This research highlights the role of subtitling in balancing linguistic accuracy, cultural adaptation and offering valuable insight for audiovisual translation in cross-cultural context.
