ANALYSIS OF GOTTLIEB’S SUBTITLING STRATEGIES IN THE QUENTIN TARANTINO’S MOVIE SCRIPT ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD (2019)

This study analyzed the application of Gottlieb’s subtitling strategies in the Indonesian translation from the movie script of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). The research focused on the movie script first half, analyzing 70 instances of dialogue featuring informal language, slang, idioms, and humor reflective of 1960s Hollywood culture. Employing qualitative descriptive methods, the study identified and categorized subtitling strategies such as expansion, paraphrase, transfer, and condensation. Findings reveal how these strategies navigate cultural nuances and linguistic differences, ensuring the translated subtitles retain the original’s tone, humor, and meaning. The results contribute to the field of audiovisual translation, offering insights into effective subtitle creation for culturally complex films.
